Humility is the queen of all the virtues.

Let us have a pretaste of heavenly bliss.

(Perfect).

God is perfect in His glory. We cannot add to it 'our-given' glory.

"He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd;" (Mark.6:34)

"He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd;"
(Mark.6:34)
*******************************************

The Apostles had just returned from their preaching expedition and were tired.

Jesus asked them to go to a lonely place and take some rest.

Jesus took them in a boat.

But knowing where Jesus was going, people went there in advance and were waiting for Him.

Jesus had compassion on them.

They flocked before Him to listen to His words.

Jesus 'had compassion' on them,

because,

they were like sheep without a shepherd.

Of course,  they had their religious leaders, but they did not treat them as they should.

To use Jesus' words,

"They tell you one thing and do another.

4 They fasten up packs too heavy to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; they themselves will not stir a finger to lift them.

5 They act, always, so as to be a mark for men’s eyes.

Boldly written are the texts they carry, and deep is the hem of their garments;

6 their heart is set on taking the chief places at table and the first seats in the synagogue,

7 and having their hands kissed in the market-place, and being called Rabbi among their fellow men. (Matth.23:3 -7)

So the people could not expect love or kindness from their leaders.

But, Jesus was always

loving,

kind

and

compassionate.

Unlike the Jewish leaders He practiced what He taught.

He healed physical as well as spiritual illness  wherever He went,

physical illness by restoring their  corporal health,

and

spiritual illness by forgiving their  sins.

"I have come to call sinners to repentance." (Luke.5:32)

"11 The Pharisees saw this, and asked his disciples, How comes it that your master eats with publicans and sinners?

12 Jesus heard it, and said, It is not those who are in health that have need of the physician, it is those who are sick.

13 Go home and find out what the words mean, It is mercy that wins favour with me, not sacrifice. I have come to call sinners, not the just."
(Matth.9:11-13)

"15 And afterwards, when he was taking a meal in his house, many publicans and sinners were at table with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many of these who followed him.

16 Thereupon the scribes and Pharisees, seeing him eat with publicans and sinners in his company, asked his disciples, How comes it that your master eats and drinks with publicans and sinners?

17 Jesus heard it, and said to them, It is not those who are in health that have need of the physician, it is those who are sick. I have come to call sinners, not the just."
(Mark.2: 15 - 17)

So, we see that Jesus came to the world in search of us, sinners.

He is full of love and compassion for us.

At the time Jesus was born, His Jewish brethren 'were like sheep without a shepherd;'

But now we are not so.

Jesus has given us many shepherds to take care of us.

Our Holy Father,  Bishops and Priests are with us only to take care of us spiritually.

They are our shepherds and we should follow them when they lead to the spiritual pastures, where we must graze our spiritual food and grow in our spiritual life.

They have no other duty but to take care of our spiritual life.

They are supposed to lead a simple and dedicated life

like Jesus Himself,

search for sinners,

lead them to contrition,

forgive their sins,

and

serve them with Our Lord Himself

as their spiritual food.

We should see Jesus Himself in our spiritual shepherds,

love and obey them

and

seek their spiritual direction

in our journey

to our eternal home.

We and our shepherds are like two wheels of a bike

and

our spiritual bike can move

only  if both the wheels move together.

We should thank Jesus for having made us

'sheep with shepherds'

unlike the Jews.

But how do we look at our shepherd,

as one who cares for us

or

as one who rules over us with a set of rules and regulations?

Ruling over one is different from caring for one.

A doctor  cares for the physical welfare of the patient under his care.

But a sub-inspector cares more for the law and order situation of the place under his care rather than the welfare of the people living there.

We must look at our Parish priest as a spiritual doctor,  not as an administrator.

In the same way parish priests must give more importance to the spiritual welfare of the faithful under his care rather than administration of the parish.

Jesus has given us only one law, the law of love.

"Love God, love your neighbour as you love yourself."

When one sheep out of hundred is lost, the shepherd leaves the 99 sheep where they are and goes in search of the lost sheep and does not rest until he finds it and brings it back .

The sheep should not leave the care of the shepherd under any situation.

We think  that our parish priests are administrators of parish schools, lands and other institutions.

So we approach them only for administrative purposes.

But they are not administrators, they are spiritual Fathers.

Their only duty is spiritual caring,  not material administration.

Let Christian love be the only guiding principle in our shepherd -sheep relationship.

"Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in  Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against." (Luke.2:34)

"Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in  Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against." (Luke.2:34)
*******************************************

Jesus was born  for the redemption of the whole human race,  not for the fall even of a single human being.

Then why does Simeon say, "this child is set for the fall and rising of many in  Israel.''?

'Rise',  alright,  but why 'fall'?

We can be sure that Jesus won't cause anybody's fall, because He won't act against His own purpose.

The  purpose of His birth  is the rise of the fallen people, not anybody's fall.

How is He set for the fall of any?

One analogy will help us to understand.

One Village had no school.  So most of the boys were uneducated.

Government started a school there and appointed a talented and dedicated teacher.

One father had two sons and he sent both of them to school.

One son had interest in studies and made use of that opportunity to study well.

But the other son was mischievous and had no interest in studies and looked at the teacher as an enemy.

He thought that the teacher was the cause of his unwanted school life.

One day in his irritation and anger, he threw a stone at the teacher and broke his head.

Result?

The teacher was admitted in the hospital and he was sent to jail.

He was telling the culprits in the jail that the teacher was the cause of his jail life.

But we know that the same teacher was the cause of his brother's education.

Not only that. We also know that,  he was not the cause of the  boy's jail life.

In the same way,    Jesus was not the cause of anybody's fall.

But many people , by their own perverseness, in wilfully refusing to receive and obey Jesus , would take occasion of falling.

Simeon prophesies what would happen in consequence of the wilful blindness and obstinacy of many.

During His public life, multitudes of people followed Jesus wherever He went to listen to His words for their spiritual rise and also to get cured of their physical illness.

Together with these people, the Pharisees,  who envied Jesus for His attracting people towards Him by His teaching, followed Him to find fault with Him and find occasion to kill Him.

So we see that two kinds of people were following Jesus,  one kind as His disciples and the other as His enemies, one kind rising and the other falling.

But Jesus  won't leave the fallen in their fallen state .

He would help them to rise again, because He loves
His enemies.

These enemies brought about
His sufferings and crucifixion.

Before His death on the cross He prayed to His Heavenly Father to forgive all those who murdered Him as they knew not what they did.

This was a real prayer, not a show.

His Father, who is one with  His Son and the Holy Spirit, cannot ignore His prayer.

We can believe that He would have showered on all those who were responsible for His Son's death enough and more grace to move them to contrition.

They would have felt sorry for their sins .

They would have been forgiven.

We have no right to judge anybody.

There is nothing wrong in thinking in their favour.

Coming to our times, we can experience Simeon's 'rise and fall' prophecy coming true.

Those who accept and live Him rise.

Those who reject Him fall.

Let us all rise.

If we happen to fall due to human frailty,  let us rise again with the help of the Sacrament of confession.

"And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bread, no haversack, no coppers for their purses."(Mark. 6:8)

"And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bread, no haversack, no coppers for their purses."(Mark. 6:8)
*******************************************

When Jesus sent His Apostles in pairs to preach the Gospel, He gave them a few instructions to be followed by them.

He instructed them not to take with them the following things.

bread,

haversack,

and

coppers for their purses."

The Apostles were advised not to take with them food,  bag and money.

One may be tempted to ask  how one can

subsist without out food,

travel without a bag to carry things needed for one's journey and stay,

and be without  money to buy things needed for at least one's survival.

We can be sure that Jesus too knew these things.

But we must remember one thing:

All through His public life Jesus too went about preaching without carrying food, bag and money.

He ate the food given by His devotees,  together with His disciples.

He never carried any bag on His shoulder.

Jesus never carried money with him.

Once when he was asked to pay temple tax, He said Peter,

"cast a line into the lake and pull out the first fish you hook. Open its mouth, and you will find a coin. Use it to pay your taxes and mine.”

So it is no wonder that he expected His disciples to be like Him.

Though the whole universe is His, He is poor in spirit.

He wants His followers to be like Him.

It is applicable not only to the first disciples, but also to those who occupy their position even now.

May be Jesus wants to establish an interdependent relationship between the preachers and those to whom they preach.

The preachers of the Gospel should care for the spiritual welfare of the preached.

The  preached should take care of the temporal welfare of the Preachers.

In other words, the faithful must be dependent on their spiritual Fathers for their growth in Faith.

The spiritual Fathers must be dependent on their spiritual children for their temporal needs.

This interdependency is essential for a healthy spiritual life of the whole Christian family.

Nowadays there is tendency towards independent spiritual life.

The faithful don't approach their spiritual Fathers for spiritual guidance, because of which confession has lost its importance among the faithful and the sense of sin has completely been lost.

It is like serious patients not approaching the doctors imagining themselves perfectly healthy.

The clergy also have independent income and can live comfortably without any help from their spiritual children.

This independence has resulted in dividing our community into two groups each finding fault with the other without mutual love and understanding.

Only putting Our Lord's instructions into practice can bring about unity among us.

I am writing what I am thinking.

Kindly point out if I have gone wrong anywhere.

Lourdu Selvam.
